I was born in Kansas City, Missouri, one of the blues strong-holds of the industrial North in the 40s. I was raised in St. Louis, another big blues city. An early passion was rock & roll & I became an avid record collector & have attended hundreds of rock & blues concerts. My biggest influence is Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, but I also love the Beatles, Stones, Neil Young, Richard Thompson & R.E.M. The picture you see here is of B.B. King & myself. I graduated from St. Louis University with a major in broadcast communications & I married my high school sweetie in 1970. I became a book store manager & did that for 12 years. My job took us to East Texas and Las Vegas, Nevada, where we lived for 15 years. I helped found a blues society & co-hosted a blues radio show on KUNV-FM at University Of Nevada. My wife’s job brought us to lovely East Tennessee in 1990. I volunteered at WUTK-FM for several years, co-hosted a Grateful Dead show and hosted “Blue Monday” for 2 & 1/2 years. I helped found the Knoxville Blues Society in 1996. I’ve known Tony Lawson for many years & he knew I was interested in helping get WDVX on the air & he let me begin hosting Johnny Mack’s Friday Night Blues Attack! in January, 1998. Ruth & I have three beautiful & brilliant children, of whom we couldn’t be prouder. Please feel free to e-mail me with musical suggestions & requests. If it’s blues, I’ve got it.

  1. Ron Carter says:

Hey Johnny. A couple Fridays back I heard an announcement on your show about The Nick Moss Band going to be playing at Barleys in Maryville on November 30th. Just wanted to let you know that I emailed the band manager for Nick Moss because the date for Barleys was not on his website. He told me that Barleys overbooked that date and he was not sure what was going on. So…I emailed Barleys. They told me first that JOE Moss was playing on the 30th…then I got another email from Barleys saying that Joe Moss was playing on the 23rd. Anyway…I thought I’d let you know in case anyone else was looking forward to seeing Nick Moss. I’m from Chicago and have been to a few of Nick’s shows and was really excited to hear that he was coming to town. Kind of a bummer. Keep up the great show!

  2. Pete says:

Really, really enjoy your show (and WDVX in general). Thanks for all the years of great music.

We listen out here on the Left Coast via the net, cuz broadcast radio in So Cal has been so sad for years.
