ABOUT

About the Blue Plate Special®

The WDVX Blue Plate Special® is a live performance radio show held at noon, Monday through Saturday, at the Knoxville Visitor Center on the corner of Gay Street and Summit Hill Drive. It’s free and open to an audience of all ages!

Hosted weekdays by Red Hickey (and Doug Lauderdale on Saturdays), the WDVX Blue Plate Special® is broadcast and webcast around the world. Can’t make it down for a show? Listen live online. If you’re in town, bring your lunch and join us for real, live music in beautiful downtown Knoxville.

The WDVX Blue Plate Special® program was created in 1997, the same year WDVX started broadcasting as a community public radio station from a 14-foot camper studio in Norris, TN. The noontime show included themed broadcasts and occasional live performances from visiting artists. In late summer of 2005, WDVX brought back Knoxville’s rich tradition of mid-day live radio shows by producing the Blue Plate Special® in front of a live studio audience from its new home in the Knoxville Visitor Center, located at 301 South Gay Street. The WDVX Blue Plate Special® is now a signature event in downtown Knoxville and was recognized as the 2006 Knoxville Area Museum/Attraction of the Year.

From blues to bluegrass, country to Celtic, folk to funk, rockabilly to hillbilly, local to international, it’s all part of the real, live music experience on the WDVX Blue Plate Special.

What you need to know before submitting…(you must read this before you will be considered for booking)

The Blue Plate Special®(BPS) is a FREE show. Performers may sell merchandise (you keep 100%), promote upcoming performances, promote a CD and website etc.; however, there is no performance fee. The promotional benefit and opportunity to sell merchandise is mutually beneficial for you and WDVX. The BPS is a LIVE broadcast, in front of a LIVE audience. It is not a “taped” only performance. THE BLUE PLATE SPECIAL® IS PRIMARILY AN ACOUSTIC VENUE! Please be aware that the BPS stage is small, the listening room in the visitor center is small, and the BPS PA system is, you guessed it, small. Electric bands are STRONGLY encouraged to strip down their setup to accommodate an “unplugged” performance (drummers, PLEASE consider rods or brushes instead of sticks). We enjoy all types of music and bands here, but we really do have to keep an eye on our volume…otherwise people leave, and that’s just bad for everybody. Although we are proud to showcase new talent, we ask that you have some experience before submitting. We encourage new acts to get experience through open-mic nights and jams, as well as actual performance experience BEFORE requesting to book onto the show. WORLDWIDE radio is not a good “first gig.” Get some experience…then apply. Try to book your BPS appearance around a performance in/around Knoxville. The BPS is a tool to use to promote an upcoming performance or new CD. YOU MUST PROVIDE WDVX WITH DEMO MATERIAL. WE NEED TO KNOW THAT YOU FIT OUR PROGRAMMING CRITERIA… Youtube, Reverbnation, Facebook, whatever, but make it EASY for us to preview your music. When submitting to the BPS please send specific dates that work, keeping in mind we often are booking months ahead at a time. We book 48 acts a month so if you are told a date is available it doesn’t mean we are holding it for you. Until you receive a message that your date is CONFIRMED, it is available to the first taker. WDVX RESERVES THE RIGHT TO DECLINE ARTIST REQUESTS FOR ANY REASON, AT ANY TIME. We’ve had as few people as 10 in attendance, and we’ve had as many as 190-200 (pretty much standing room only). Promoting your performance is YOUR responsibility. We’ll do our part, but help us out by linking to the WDVX Blue Plate Special® on your Facebook page (while you’re at it, give us a “like” on FB). Be sure to mention that your performance will be webcast around the world at wdvx.com, and tag WDVX whenever you can on Facebook.

The WDVX Blue Plate Special® is a free, daily concert series from 12 noon to 1 p.m. that features live performances from local, national, and international artists. It is broadcast to a worldwide audience via webcast at www.WDVX.com, and may be in Knoxville on FM stations 89.9 and 102.9. On any day of the week, downtown Knoxville working professionals, tourists traveling to and through Knoxville, and loyal WDVX listeners flock to the Knoxville Visitor Center to enjoy a daily dose of the Blue Plate. Many audiences bring a lunch or enjoy a snack and drink from the Visitor Center gift shop. The Blue Plate features at least 2 acts a show, 6 days a week! Some of our previous performing artists include: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, The Avett Brothers, Old Crowe Medicine Show, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, Jim Lauderdale, Marty Stuart, Nickel Creek, Red Stick Ramblers, Rodney Crowell, String Cheese Incident, The Del McCoury Band, Tim O’Brien, Yonder Mountain String Band, David Grisman, Claire Lynch Band, Brett Dennen, Tommy Emmanuel, Uncle Earl, The Infamous Stringdusters, the Jerry Douglas Band, Joan Osborne, John Oats, Mary Gauthier, Darrell Scott, and many many more!
